The children of Josef Fritzl 5 years later

This story gained worldwide attention five years ago, and I told the family’s life of  hell here But how has life changed for all of the children, and the rest of the family, since their father, Josef has been in prison?  Well, 5 years ago, the story came to a head, when Dr Albert Reiter was asked to examine a young woman  brought into the hospital intensive care ward in Amstetten, Austria.

She was a teenager but she resembled a wizened old woman – bleeding gums,  missing teeth, skin so white he later remarked that he needed sunglasses to  look at it. The patient was 19-year-old Kerstin Fritzl, who, until she was carried  unconscious into the hospital, had never spent a second outside the stinking  underground dungeon that her father, Josef Fritzl, had made her home.  This girl was the first of 7 children born for the incest of Josef and his daughter Elizabeth.

Right now, Elizabeth, and her 6 surviving children live in a secluded village in Austria away from the media.  Josef is in prison for the rest of his life for the heinous crimes he committed, which included murdering one of the children, and disposing of the body.

Today, the Fritzls have all been given new identities as authorities make up for the failure to protect the family.  The children who had lived all their lives underground.  In the new house they were reunited with Monika, now 19, Lisa, 20, and  Alexander, 16, who had all lived upstairs in the main house with Fritzl and  Rosemarie.

One of the carers who helped in the writing of Monster said: “Initially there  was conflict between the cellar children and the upstairs family raised by  their grandparents.

“The day the upstairs children started calling Elisabeth ‘Mama’ was the day  she knew she had won their hearts.”

the sun.co.uk

Kerstin loves music and clothes,  has a boyfriend and spends her days with  a private tutor who teaches her and Stefan.  Her brother Stefen dreams of becoming a ship’s captain,  seeing a world that just a few short years ago was confined to a single,  stinking room.

Felix has since virtually forgotten his time in the cellar. He attends a local  school, among children who know nothing of his terrible past.

Monika is preparing to go to university next year, Lisa is working on  finishing her high school exams and Alexander wants to become a mechanical  engineering apprentice.

As for mother Elizabeth, was given the house, worth £680,000, by the state, a £50,000 lump  sum and a pension in the region of £3,400 a month.  She has had many offers to write of her ordeal, which is worth millions, but has refused, saying she wants peace for her family.

Now Josef Fritzl, is imprisoned for life, and as prisoner 4546765 sits alone in his cell, staring at shopping channels  on TV. Occasionally the door rattles when a passing con hits it and shouts  an insult.  He is slowly slipping into the world of dementia.  Back in 2009, after he was first jailed, he dreamed of getting his family back  on his side. For a year he bombarded Elisabeth with pathetic letters, sent  via his lawyer, asking for sympathy, understanding… and even money.

Fritzl even tried dissuading his wife Rosemarie from divorcing him, but  failed. Also using his lawyers, the property developer with a  multimillion-pound empire audaciously tried to obtain planning permission  for a dozen or so flats, an underground garage and an office block on land  he bought before he was brought to justice.

It was at first approved, then banned.

As for Rosemary, Fritzl’s ex wife, the crime proved to be so disturbing, she would sit in the dungeon her husband built, and cry for days.  She too was a victim of this tragedy, as she believed her husband’s lies.  Her former husband’s multimillion-pound property empire was seized by the  state and she received nothing from it. She was upset that she couldn’t even  take any furniture from the family home.  All was impounded to pay off her husband’s debts.

As for the reconciliation with Elizabeth, it’s a slow process.  Rosemary now  74, visits the family once a week and is adored by all the  children, who know that whatever else she may have been, she was no willing  conspirator with Fritzl but, like them, a bullied victim.

It’s so hard to believe that one human could inflict so much pain and damage, isn’t it?

    Elisabeth Fritzl on torture ordeal

Elisabeth Fritzl has spoken out for the first time about being imprisoned for 24 years and raped and abused by her father, Josef.

The 42-year-old has given statements to a judge in Austria who is compiling evidence against Josef Fritzl. Elisabeth reportedly revealed that if she ever refused Fritzl sex, he would abuse her children.

    More on Elizabeth Fritzl:

She lives in a brightly painted house in a tiny hamlet which the Austrian media, when they mention it at all, refer to as “Village X”. The two-storey family home is kept under constant CCTV surveillance, and any strangers caught lurking nearby can expect to be picked up by the police within minutes.

  4. How could Rosemary not suspect anything? Did they live in that big of a house that she couldn’t get any hints something fishy was up?

  5. michellelambert

His mother was also locked up in the same house untill she died in a room with bricked or boarded up windows, then he locks his daughter in the cellar for 24 years and fathers 7 kids with her. Two women incarcerated, 7 children born and his wife did not know? Bullsheizer! Lol. You try telling that to some other sucker. Plus a neighbor and a lodger saw her helping her husband haul food into the basement by the wheelbarrow load. Oh, honig, was ist alle this food for if you are going on vacation? Lol. Spare me! I see nothing! I know nothing! I hear nothing! Javoll, herr kommandant!

  6. Janet

No one could be that ignorant….she had to know….and why didn’t she question when the 3 children suddenly showed up on her doorstep, to be raised?

  7. Janet

What’s wrong with these stupid women? The guy is a nut, and so are they, considering him a hero.

Murderous love: Why are so many women aroused by serial killers?

Male serial killers often receive fan letters and even marriage proposals from women, after they are imprisoned in jail. Established crime writer Mark Sennen offers some simple explanations as to why so many ordinary women get a kick out of dating the bad boys.

Rosemarie has not even ever been questioned as potential accomplice of the Fritzl because – mothers can never be guilty of a crime. Big pile of bullcrap. If she really would have been interrogated … Stockholm syndrome.

  13. Tracey

This story sickens me , mostly because it’s not got any better for any of the children on Elizabeth ! How do the children to terms with the fact the Grandfather is there actual father

  14. janice

Why in the world would they ever consider him a Hero? Illness is there, for a Father to have Children with, his own Daughter. Inbreeding Nuts. All are nuts.

Here’s another point I’m sure you all know about:

  16. Ella

I wonder if we would get any photos or updates on the family ever. I’d love to see them turn out to be ‘normal’ and happy people.

  17. Janet

I’ve been looking, but so far nothing….one can only imagine the horror they all went through…..

  18. Nancy636

Mrs. Fritzl was obedient, that is why he married her. I used to wonder why women put up with certain things from spouses, but as someone who does not live that way, I would not even begin to wonder why anymore. I am sure she feared him, she even stood by him when he was convicted of rape. She was a victim also. I would have killed him in the early years rather than live like that, so that could be said about Elizabeth, but fear is again a factor. She is a strong person and though her children are a result of incest, that is what kept her alive.

  19. Chrisitane Rieckmann

I cannot believe that the daughter of Fritzl will ever get over that !
    She has been killed.
I hope she will recover of course-but is there a real Chance ?!
I mean I would be fatal jelaous of all my Kids for them having everxthing I never ever had.
Can we recover from all tragedies – i am not sure.
    See Fritzl himself-he couldn´t.

Must be the nightmare of all nightmares – wish them all the luck on earth-but it is a heavy duty to carry !!!!!

    Christiane Rieckmann

  20. Les

Mrs. Fritzl goes unquestioned, unpunished…she feels upset because she couldn’t keep her furniture…how awful! To compromise to such a degree because of “fear” is to become an accomplice to one of the most horrible crimes. And all the tenants, etc. knew NOTHING? One fellow in the documentary, who was a tenant, complained of a “knocking noise”. Fritzl says its the “gas heater” and the tenant stated, “I didn’t believe that”. Ha! But what did he do, why didn’t he follow up? Fritzl sometimes left the door open, but all the tenants, who were apparently very comfortable to live on this man’s property, were to scared to so much as peek at what might be happening. What a shame-but not surprising this happened in Germany, a country known for “I saw nuthink! I heard nuthink!” I mean, 24 YEARS??? Well, if they could systematically kill millions over there while others “didn’t know”, one daughter imprisoned and raped is a breeze.

  21. Janet

To this day, I still think Rosemarie knew about it. How could she not be suspicious, knowing her husband’s history?

  22. tj hudson

they knew. they all knew. and everyone of those cowards that failed to save Elisabeth……should all be punished for the same crimes…..or at least neglect…..and may they all burn in hell for every moment elisabeth. Suffered. The only victims here are elisabeth and her children.

  23. Janet

By the way, is the old slime ball still alive in prison?

  24. anon101

i think her mom known else how did Elisabeth survive without food when he went to India Somebody must have kept her fed or did he just leave her with extra food

  25. Dappa

Ok, am I the only one wanting to know if the kids are normal since they’re the result of inbreeding? What a awful nightmare, they should’ve put him to death.

  26. Janet

Since he admitted guilt, why bother with a trial?

  27. Maria

I hope he lives a long time. He deserves to spend the rest of his days in solitary confinement in the smallest room possible.

I hope to someday see a picture of Elizabeth and her children happy.

  28. Amy

Les, this took place in AUSTRIA, not Germany. But I guess you dont even care, right?!

  29. Katie

To those of you saying her mother knew about this and is also a monster, don’t be so quick to judge. We don’t know the whole story. If she did know then yes she’s a monster too, but if she didn’t I couldn’t imagine how terrible it would be for her to find out. The real monster is the man who did this and I’m glad he’s in jail I wish there was a more harsh punishment for him though.

  30. Melanie

    Watched a bio on this.

Is it possible that Elizabeth is a child out of wedlock and the father knew? He decided to punish Elizabeth? Only reason I question, is there doesnt appear any born abnormalities out of a parent-child union producing children. Maybe there is no biological connection between the father and Elizabeth that only he and/or his ex know about; struck me as odd is all. Can children out of a parent-child union be born without abnormalities?

  31. Janet

I thought of that when this article first broke 6 years ago. For having 7 children total, nothing was ever mentioned of any mental disorders, other than adapting to their imprisonment.

  32. Janet

Fritzl is currently serving out his sentence in Garsten Abbey, a former monastery in Upper Austria that has been converted into a prison. He is in a special section of the prison for the criminally insane.

  33. where are all of elisabeth’s brothers and sisters by her parents? only one son has said that he was afraid of being beaten by his father, but, where were the rest?

  34. Janet

They are all afraid to speak out….

  35. Susan

Irony of ironies that he complains about not being able to sleep because the prison doors are too loud. I can’t believe that the Austrian authorities gave him what he wanted. Messed up.

  36. Janet

The place should have been burned down years ago….so now we have possible terrorists being housed in the home of a deranged heathen.

  37. Robin

I dont get why everyone is excusing the wife. Yes she knew his history and probably knew that something was odd about the dissapearing of her daughter, but so should other people have! He raped 2 woman before, elizabeth was always running away and then she suddenly dissapears? Also his friends saying that they were okay with the fact that he said he had a girlfriend and had beaten his wife and children. This is a perfect case of people knowing that things arent right, but assume that someone they know wouldn’t do someting like that.
For god sake people, open your eyes and speak up!

  38. Janet

I still say she knew….there’s no woman I know of who can be that stupid, not to know what their hubby was doing…..

  39. Mike

Thanks for all the info Janet

A truly unbelievable story. I choose to believe in hell, because there is no way that man will pay for what he did in his lifetime. There has to be a special hell for him that will last an eternity. If it was up to me I would publicly castrate him though. No anesthesia or pain killers of course.
Thanks Janet. Please keep us updated. I too would like to one day see a picture of Elisabeth and her children as normal, happy people.

  41. Howard

How can anyone say his wife didnt know she was with him the whole damn time sheesh come on people she is sick just like him

  42. HSL

To me it is not the wife who should be blamed. She could have been quite oblivious of the problem, seeing her nature to turn the blind eye toward his abusive treatment toward their children since they were young. When she found a kid on the garden and got a call in Elizabeth’s voice (recorded, according to the source in google) she just took them in and raised them. No inquisitive nature, no nothing. Maybe just a traditional woman. Her husband was convicted for 18 months in prison for rape long ago and she lived with him, not divorced earlier. Disgusting.
I’m more curious what in the fucking world the other siblings were doing when she was abused. Did they never care to call her? Trace her? The victim’s closest brother came forth to give testimony only after she had to undergo 24 years of life filled with horror? Understand that he was afraid to reveal anything when he was living under his dad’s fence, but what about after he gained independence?
But same question goes to Elizabeth. Why didn’t she protest to the police when she was fucking found by the police, before she was sent back to her freaking insane genetic father? Yes she was young, just 10 or 11..but this story is so devastating, right after finding the story about Natasha K’s abduction.
Sorry but it is only right that the Austrian government be worried about the country’s reputation.

  43. mimi

This is abselutely horrifing, it is so sick to hold children in captivity.

  44. Yes! He deserves to have all his teeth knocked out ! I hope he gets butt raped every night. I really want to see an update on elisabeth and her children.

  45. Marlene

HORRIBLE as HORRIBLE can be!!!! I have the same wonder about her siblings, as HSL has. Where were this people the whole entire time???!!!! How could they never look for their sister????!!!! As for the mother, that “cow” is to blame as well, how could a mother give up on a child that like that?!

  46. Dakota

Thank you janet for your constant updates on this issue. Much appreciated.

  47. Stacey E.

If he was willing to murder and hide one of his own kids, it would go a long way in explaining why she “didn’t know” what was going on. He had complete control over everyone in his life, under threat. It is possible to believe she didn’t know what was happening, but I’m sure she was suspicious of what he was up to. Bringing up that suspicion would have gotten her beaten or killed.
To answer the question of whether you think someone could inflict that much pain and damage. Yes, I can believe it. The only reason there’s a “devil” is because humans won’t admit that all the evil in the world is human made. We are the ugliest creatures inhabiting this planet.
Her mother is only to blame because she allowed the abuse to happen to begin with. But saying you just don’t have to take abuse is a lot easier than actually getting away from it. The same thing that creates most pedophilia is the same thing that creates generations of abused children and spouses. It’s just the way things are, for far too many people.

  48. D. Herrmann

Wife Rosemarie was never really interrogated by the state prosecutor – women, mothers can never be guilty, only males are perpetrators, so why bother to even ask. Now let’s get real: Without her help, hiding the children in the basement would not have been possible in the long run. She could have broken the chain; instead, she chose to play the victim, in exchange for a large house, food, money and all the things she expected from a husband. Too bad for her the state finally confiscated everything LOL

  49. Diana

So who was it that helped him build a dungeon? His brother in law? Excuse me but it was known fact he was a rapist and mean as hell to his family, why would this guy happily build hi a go go ? He should be jailed for helping with this horrible place that surely he knew wasn’t going to be used for anything good,

  50. destinyosbourne

Austria has been dubbed “the land of dungeons” because the government paid people to build fallout shelters. That’s what the Fritzl dungeon really was, Josef was actually paid by the government to build it. A lot of people in Austria built them and then they were never used. Famous long-term kidnapping victim Natascha Kampusch was also held in a government paid for fallout shelter turned dungeon in Austria.

Also, to answer a question that’s been asked a few times in the comment section here. Yes, Elisabeth was Josef’s biological daughter and all her children were born from incest. Contrary to popular belief first generation incest doesn’t usually result in horrible deformities. Actually, if you look at pictures of the upstairs children they look perfectly normal… you wouldn’t even know their father is also their grandfather and their mother also their sister.

  51. Emma

Unfortunately it is not hard to believe that one person could cause so much pain and suffering. There are some evil, twisted, sick individuals in the world. Thankfully the evil, twisted, sick individual in mine and my children’s life committed suicide, shame Elizabeth’s abuser didn’t do the same.

  52. Janet

Just looking at Fritzl, one can see he’s evil and mentally ill.

  53. k

Why call them the “children of Joseph Fritzl?” That aberration has no right to be called a father, whether it is intended to denote biological relationship or emotional. It’s offensive to use his name in connection with his victims. If they are called anything, it should be “Elisabeth’s children,” as it sounds as though she was their only source of love and protection.

  54. Darlene Pickron

I am in America, and I remember when this story broke here in the states when it first happened. I have read the book detailing the police inquiries, and Elisabeth’s story when it was fresh. I have also read all the comments listed above. Ironically I googled his name because there was never any update on what happened to her, her mother, and her children. Based on public record this is MY opinion:
Mr. Fritzl is definitely an aberration; however, he was created by HIS mother, and HER beliefs. Given history pertaining to Hitler, his officers, and his concentration camps Joseph never stood a chance for “normalcy”. Let’s be honest – how many people can say they grew up only feet away from one of the worst camps being run by the Nazi’s, was forced to join the “junior league”, and witness the atrocities UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL, and then went on to live a healthy, productive, loving life????? No one. Everyone linked to that error was damaged for life. However short or long their life was after the war ended. Couple that with the severe physical, mental, and emotional abuse he was given by his mother he was never meant to be an upstanding adult. Plain and simple. He was damaged at a very young age, and that damage was just compounded upon until his mother finally died.
Mrs. Fritzl: She knew nothing about her daughter’s disappearance or whereabouts. Testimony from neighbors, family, the offspring, and his own admissions leave no stone unturned when it comes to how his home was ran. He was a dictator, and he learned this by the Nazi’s. It was taught by his mother. She was beaten, raped, sodomized, mentally and emotionally abused, and enslaved. In the name of love. She was treated as a birthing chamber, and nothing more. When she had no more use she was kept around only for his bidding. I do not, and will never believe this woman (who was abused for twice as long as Elizabeth had been alive) had ANY CLUE what was going on. She did what she was told, and she kept her head low. She learned to “conform” to her husband’s whims, and that is probably the only reason she is still alive. My heart goes out to her. Not only did she withstand all the severe abuses he inflicted upon her whenever, and wherever he chose; she has to live with the fact that her baby was raped, imprisioned, and dehumanized every day for 24 years UNDER HER FEET. Try taking that to the grave.
Elisabeth – I said this when the story broke, and I reiterate it now – GOD, and GOD ALONE kept her alive. Despite how horribly wrong her life turned into, and all the things she has seen, and done GOD KEPT HER. She left that dungeon with her SANITY. Can ANYONE else say they could of done the same???????

  55. Richard

Oh please Darlene, there is no god. Believe it or not, sometime in the future you will learn that everything in this world, good or bad is done by humans.
