Trump at Pence Dinner Calls for ‘Merit-Based’ Immigration System

Wednesday Trump called for a “merit-based” immigration system during a speech at a dinner honoring Vice-President-elect Mike Pence. “We’re working on the border. We want people to come in to our country, but we want them to come in legally,” Trump said.

Adding that he wants the system “at least to a certain degree to be merit-based” and “we want people to come into our country who are going to love us and respect us.”

The president-elect also took aim at super PACs during his 25-minute speech.

“I think we ought to straighten out the PACS — right, folks? I think they should be able to give to a campaign and expose it and everything. But I think this PAC stuff — maybe we can get it straightened out, because it’s a little ridiculous. You have no idea. It’s like the great sinkhole. You have no idea who’s doing it, who’s running them,” Trump said, Axios reports.

I think people get very rich running PACs, but we’re going to try and get that straightened out, because it’s crazy,” Trump added.

“We’re going to get rid of the regulations that are strangling the economy,” he continued. “Almost every single person I ask was more excited about the regulations being cut than the taxes, which is surprising.”

The Vice President’s Dinner included an audience of about 500, containing donors, cabinet appointees and other Trump supporters, The Times reports.
