Hmm, so for all these years, the taxpayers have been paying for these kids’ college educations? What a good deal. And the debt is rising? Something has to be done, let the students’ pay more, they’ve had it too easy all these years, government paying for everything. Let them take responsibility for once in their lives, instead of expecting someone else to foot the bill. And so, just because finally, the government is seeing sense, they riot. So much for their education put to good use, isn’t it? When anyone destroys the property of others, it’s a sign of society sinking fast.
Today, police have arrested 153 people during the student demonstrations in London, proposed university tuition hikes. The protestors have been playing games with police, that culminated in a violent standoff in the capital’s Trafalgar Square. Students are furious over the coalition government’s decision to allow schools to triple the cap imposed on tuition fees, allowing the best universities to charge up to 9,000 pounds ($14,000) per year in a bid to reduce the burden on Britain’s debt-laden public sector. British students currently pay up to 3,000 pounds ($4,675).
And earlier this month thess activists tried to ransack the governing Conservative Party’s headquarters in London in a protest.
“We need to keep up this momentum because eventually we’ll get through to them and we can start negotiations,” said Shayan Moghedam, 17, from Woodhouse College in north London. “This is not something that can just be ignored and the fact that students keep coming out week after week proves that.” Yahoo
Moghedam is just one of thousands of students taking part in sitins and occupying government offices. Most of the protests have been nonviolent, but in Trafalgar Square, protestors vandalized Nelson’s Column — erected in the honor of the British naval hero — and attacking nearby businesses. Police said two officers were injured in the clashes.
Yet thousands of students in Bristol marched on the city’s shopping district. The demonstration was largely peaceful, although at one point protesters lit flares and pelted police with ketchup and mustard. Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg was pelted with snowballs. Clegg is under fire, for once saying he was against the proposed tuition hikes, yet now he’s changed his mind.
“Nick Clegg is a snake,” said Grace Charlesworth, 17, also from Woodhouse College. “He said our educations didn’t depend on the money in our parents’ pockets but that is exactly what it will become. He is a lying snake who couldn’t care less about our education.” Yahoo
Hey, the taxpayers are footing most of the bill here. If you want a better education, pay for it. But this message doesn’t seem to be getting through to the students. Still they protest…….with a little property damage tossed in the process…..
